Amadou and Mariam, the married pair, known as "the blind couple from Mali" met at Mali's Institute for the Young Blind, and found they shared an interest in music. Amadou lost his vision at the age of 16 while Mariam became blind at age 5 as a consequence of untreated measles. They have since the release of their Manu Chao-produced Dimanche à Bamako album in 2006, become the world music act that it's safe to admit to liking, whether you be a tie-dye wearing Womadian or a skinny-jeaned indie kid. It's a mix of the deceptively simple and rhythmically irresistible. Good times most definitely guaranteed.
